How To Make A Ringtone, Apple-Style

First, I recommend shooting yourself in the face. It’s easier.

But, if you’re hell bent on creating a ringtone, here are the steps I had to go through to create one from a 5-second mp3 clip:

1. Find a cool song. I found a track on the Scott Pilgrim game soundtrack that I thought would make a cool ringtone.

2. Ask iTunes to create a ringtone from it. iTunes will laugh at you. That was soooooo iTunes 8.

3. Foiled by Apple, go to the Internet. The Internet is filled with directions on how to create ringtones in iTunes. These are only applicable if you live in 2007.

4. Create a playlist and place your mp3 in the playlist. Pretend like you’re the first one to ever think of this and pat your back accordingly.

5. Place a blank CD in the drive and burn the playlist to the CD. Wait for it.

6. Open the Preferences window in iTunes and click Import Settings.

7. Change the setting to import as AAC.

8. Click on the CD you’ve created and hit the Import CD button. This will import the song you already have, but in AAC format.

9. Open Windows Explorer, go spelunking until you find the AAC file you just created, and change the file extension to be .m4r. That stands for Motherfuckers 4 eveR for making me do this.

10. Select the .m4r file and drag it back to the Ringtones listing in iTunes. Give iTunes the finger as you’re doing this.

11. Connect your iPhone and sync ringtones.

12. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone, then click on Sounds, and select your new ringtone from the list of ringtones. Ask yourself if it was worth it as you place your phone back in your pocket BECAUSE NO ONE EVER CALLS YOU ANYWAY.

See? It’s totally simple!

Alternative Steps:

1. Click on a song that you bought from the iTunes store and order iTunes to create a ringtone. You will then be asked to buy the new ringtone even though you’ve already paid for the song. If you do this, I don’t think we can be friends any longer.
